Market Report-8-9-23, Marktbericht 8-9-23

Cheese stable, protein concentrates continuing to fall, skimmed milk powder falling, spot milk price and milk fat rising.

Market Report-8-9-23, Marktbericht 8-9-23

The market remains quiet with neither buyers nor sellers active. Cheese prices currently remain stable, while the spot milk price and milk fat price are rising. In contrast, trends for skimmed milk powder and protein concentrates remain negative. The question is when milk will increasingly flow towards cheese.

We are also recording the feed costs for dairy cows for the first time; these were also stable.

And in Switzerland?

In contrast to the foreign trend, Switzerland has decided to leave the reference price for milk at 81 Rp. As a result, Swiss dairy products will continue to lose market share both domestically and in exports. The surplus milk is increasingly being used to produce milk powder. This is also reflected in the figures: As of the end of June 2023, cheese production has declined by -3%, while powder production has increased by 16%.

To the question: When will more milk flow into cheese production?

Currently, the production of protein concentrates and skimmed milk powder is not profitable. It is therefore foreseeable that more milk will be used for cheese production in the near future.

Our forecast for Q4:

We expect prices to fall.
