Cheese prices are increasing, while protein concentrates (casein) and milk fat see slight gains. Skimmed milk powder remains stable, and the spot milk price is declining.

Overview and Current Situation

The dairy market is currently exhibiting a seasonally calm environment. Nevertheless, prices are on a slight upward trend, a signal that should not mask the declining spot price for milk, which could indicate a negative market development.

Situation in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the market remains tense. The aggressive strategy of a large dairy trader, who is releasing substantial quantities of low-quality industrial cheese into circulation, is causing unrest. Meanwhile, significant tensions are arising within the Emmental cheese association. However, these developments could be viewed as advantageous for buyers, as they maintain price pressure.

Q1 – Have we seen the lowest prices?

Up until Tuesday, I would have answered this question with a clear "Yes." However, the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Brandenburg has altered the situation, resulting in a de facto export ban on German dairy products to third countries. Is there now pressure on the EU markets? Will skimmed milk powder and butter be produced in large quantities, thereby exerting pressure on their prices? Or will policymakers be able to resolve the issue swiftly?

At present, the situation remains uncertain.

Outlook for Q1 and Q2 2025

Q1 2025:

Currently, the situation remains uncertain

Q2 2025:

Currently, the situation remains uncertain.

It is also important to note the announced trade policy of the USA, which could lead to market instability and sudden price fluctuations due to potential tariffs.

We recommend closely monitoring developments and preparing for volatile market conditions.
